The style of these suits differentiates according to the gender.

These suits are also being worn as undergarments in water sports which do need these suits such as scuba diving, surfing, water skiing and wakeboarding.  There are many contests which are being held in many countries where people show their physical charms and muscular bodies, in these contests also these types of suits are being worn; they are also famous to wear for magazine photography for glamour as well as for those which have issues related to annual water sports featuring models and sport personalities. In the past there were limited styles and designs available in these suits but modern clothing has bring change and innovation in thus type of clothing too and now there are number of styles to be worn.

These designs are being made according to the physical appearance or physic of people who wore them. They can choose a design or style which will suit them better and will not look awkward. Materials for these costumes also vary. Their styles very much depend on the culture of the country or community and their standards of modesty. In the past swimsuits which were for man were made in a way that will leave their chests uncover but for women the styles were made to cover as much of their body as possible, and let them swim comfortably too.

In 1920s the most used material or it will be fine to say the only material that was being used for these suits was rayon. Bathing suits were being made in tight fittings, but the durability of this material proved doubtful. Latex and nylon were the alternatives of rayon and used in 1930s.

Styles of men’s suits are boardshorts, swim trunks, jammers, thongs, briefs also known as speedos, and g-strings. All these styles are to only cover the lower bodies of men.

There are many trend and patterns for women suits in length and cuts, there is not much change in the original variety of these suits but the most new invention is burqani for Muslim women, this style cover the whole body and still remain comfortable while swimming. The other styles for western women are one-piece, bikinis or thongs.
